Overview:

Some days it feels like we’re keeping a personal ledger. In one column … we list the good things that happen. And in the other column … the hard stuff. At the end of the day, they seem to balance each other out. Well, today on INSIGHT FOR LIVING, Chuck Swindoll points to a passage that puts flesh on these emotions. We’re looking at Genesis 18 … where we find the venerable saint, Abraham, still waiting on God to fulfill His promise.

Message Summary:

In this message, Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores the emotional complexity of the human experience through a significant day in the life of Abraham. Life often feels like a ledger where the "good things" and the "hard stuff" are constantly balancing each other out. We find Abraham in Genesis 18 facing exactly this kind of day—experiencing the heights of divine visitation while still grappling with the weight of unfulfilled promises.

Abraham’s "upper-downer" day serves as a powerful reminder that faith does not exempt us from the emotional roller coaster of waiting. By looking at how the venerable Patriarch hosted divine guests and received a renewed promise, Chuck provides practical wisdom for navigating those days when hope and reality seem to be in tension. This sermon encourages believers to trust God’s timing even when their emotional ledger feels unbalanced.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Complexity of Emotions: Pastor Chuck discusses the reality of days where blessings and burdens coexist, challenging the idea that a life of faith should be emotionally one-dimensional.

  • The Hospitality of Faith: Abraham’s immediate and generous response to his three visitors (Genesis 18:1–8) illustrates a heart that remains open and serving even during seasons of waiting.

  • Refueling Hope: The Lord’s specific reassurance that Sarah would have a son "at this time next year" shows how God steps into our "downer" moments to provide the "upper" of fresh hope.

  • The Human Response to the Impossible: Sarah’s laughter in the face of the promise highlights the natural struggle to believe God for the miraculous as we age.

Message References:

  • Genesis 18:1–15: The central narrative of the three visitors at the oaks of Mamre and the specific prophecy of Isaac’s birth within a year.

  • Hebrews 13:2: A New Testament connection reminding us that by showing hospitality, some have "entertained angels without knowing it."

  • Romans 4:18–21: Supporting the theme of Abraham’s hope against hope regarding the physical impossibility of the promise.

Insight for Living Broadcast

Whenever I'm going through something, your sermons/talks give me such strength to make it through the day. I listen most every day at work (with my headphones on) but I notice that it helps me stay focused and calm hearing you speaking the words that God wants me to hear for that moment in time. So again, thank you! —A.R. from Massachusetts
