Overview:

Ephesians 4:7-11

Many of God’s people live like simple sheep rambling across the land—grazing here and there, eking out an existence, and hoping that one day we will be transported to a better life, from a life on earth to one in heaven. Too often, though, we don’t realize or remember to drink from that great pool of resources available to us. We need to remember that God’s power in the resurrection also works in us, and we need only to access His power through the gifts He gives us by His Spirit.

Message Summary:

Many believers live their lives like wandering sheep, merely "eking out an existence" while waiting for heaven. In this profound message from the Becoming a People of Grace series, Pastor Chuck Swindoll turns to Ephesians 4:7–11 to remind us that we have been given a vast pool of divine resources. The same power that raised Christ from the dead is available to every believer through the unique spiritual gifts bestowed upon us by His Spirit.

This overview explores the triumphant nature of Christ’s ascension and the purpose behind His "grace-gifts." Pastor Chuck emphasizes that spiritual gifts are not for our own exaltation but are given so that we might access God's power to serve others and build up the Church.

Message Key Facts:

  • Series Title: Becoming a People of Grace
  • Message Number: 13
  • Speaker: Pastor Chuck Swindoll
  • Central Theme: Recognizing and utilizing the specific spiritual gifts given to every believer through Christ’s victory and the Spirit’s distribution.
  • Core Principles:
    • The Individuality of Grace: While the body is one, grace is given to each member individually according to Christ's sovereign measure.
    • The Triumph of the Ascension: Christ’s descent to earth and subsequent ascent to heaven resulted in His "leading captivity captive" and giving gifts to men.
    • The Purpose of the Gifts: Understanding that spiritual gifts are the primary means by which we access and manifest God’s power in our daily lives.
    • The Diversity of Roles: A look at the foundational gifts (apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastor-teachers) as the framework for the distribution of all other gifts.

Message References:

  • Primary Passage: Ephesians 4:7–11
  • Supporting Contexts:
    • Romans 12:6–8: A parallel list of spiritual gifts, emphasizing that they differ according to the grace given to us.
    • 1 Corinthians 12:4–11: Paul’s teaching on the variety of gifts, ministries, and effects, all empowered by the same Spirit.
    • Psalm 68:18: The prophetic background of Christ’s ascension and the giving of gifts, which Paul quotes in Ephesians 4.

Insight for Living Broadcast

I looked you all up on Spotify and clicked on the Insight for Living link. It hit me like a brick in the face; the title of the very top episode was "Dealing with Discouragement." I listened to the episode on my drive home. I 100% believe it was God speaking to me and bringing me back from a life in darkness. I felt like it was God telling me, "This is the path and plan I have for you so keep going." —R. Y. from Georgia
