Going from Bad to Worse

Overview:

Exodus 5–6

Moses boldly requested that Pharaoh let the Israelites journey to worship God. Yet despite Moses’ obedience to God, things went from bad to worse for the people.

Reviewing Exodus 5 and 6, Pastor Chuck Swindoll recounts the anguish Moses felt as he waited for God to act. When things were harder than ever for Moses, however, he cultivated patience, wisdom, and dependence upon God.

Grasp how to take God at His word and live far above fleeting feelings!

Message Summary:

In this ninth message of the series Moses: A Man of Selfless Dedication, Pastor Chuck Swindoll examines the jarring reality that obedience to God does not always lead to immediate success. After Moses and Aaron courageously confronted Pharaoh, the situation for the Israelites actually deteriorated. This study of Exodus 5 and 6 offers critical encouragement for believers who feel like their circumstances have worsened after following the Lord’s lead.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Initial Confrontation: Moses and Aaron delivered God’s message to Pharaoh: "Let My people go." Pharaoh’s response was one of defiance and pride: "Who is the Lord that I should obey His voice?"

  • The Retaliation: Instead of releasing the people, Pharaoh increased their burden, commanding that they gather their own straw while maintaining the same daily quota of bricks.

  • The Backlash: The Israelite foremen, suffering under this new cruelty, turned their anger toward Moses and Aaron, accusing them of making the people "abominable" in Pharaoh's sight.

  • Moses’ Reaction: Distraught and discouraged, Moses returned to the Lord with an honest and painful question: "Why have You brought harm to this people? Why did You ever send me?" (Exodus 5:22).

Message References:

Primary Scripture Reference: Exodus 5:2–6:13
  • Exodus 5:2: Pharaoh’s arrogant dismissal of God’s authority.

  • Exodus 5:6–9: The decree of "bricks without straw," demonstrating the escalation of oppression.

  • Exodus 5:20–23: The internal conflict as the Israelites turn against their leaders and Moses questions God’s plan.

  • Exodus 6:1–8: God’s powerful reassurance, reminding Moses of His covenant and His identity as Yahweh.

Principles for Navigating "Worse" Times

Pastor Chuck Swindoll provides four takeaways for when following God leads to increased difficulty:

  1. Obedience is not a guarantee of ease: Sometimes, the path of righteousness leads directly into a storm. We must measure success by our faithfulness, not our immediate comfort.

  2. Opposition often signals spiritual progress: When the enemy’s kingdom is threatened, the retaliation is often fierce. Increased pressure can be a sign that God is about to move.

  3. It is okay to be honest with God: Moses did not hide his frustration. God can handle our "why" questions as long as we bring them to Him rather than turning away from Him.

  4. God’s character is the anchor: When the "what" and the "when" of God's plan don't make sense, we must fall back on the "who"—the unchanging character of the Lord who remembers His promises.

Insight for Living Broadcast

Whenever I'm going through something, your sermons/talks give me such strength to make it through the day. I listen most every day at work (with my headphones on) but I notice that it helps me stay focused and calm hearing you speaking the words that God wants me to hear for that moment in time. So again, thank you! —A.R. from Massachusetts
