Overview:

Numbers 27:12–23

Moses was God’s chosen leader to deliver the Israelites from Egypt and to guide them as they learned God’s ways in the wilderness. After four decades, Moses was charged with transferring his mantle to another who would take his place.

Pastor Chuck Swindoll teaches from the moving account in Numbers 27:12–23 as Moses passes the baton of leadership to Joshua. Just because a good leader died didn’t mean God’s plan was finished.

Discover important lessons on leadership and on God’s qualifications for the right leader!

Message Summary:

In this eighteenth message of the series Moses: A Man of Selfless Dedication, Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores the vital process of leadership transition. After forty years of leading Israel through the wilderness, Moses was tasked with passing his mantle to a successor. This study of Numbers 27 reveals the grace and humility required to "pass the baton" and demonstrates that while leaders are finite, God's work is eternal.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Setting: The plains of Moab. Moses has been told he will not enter the Promised Land but is granted a vision of it from the heights of Abarim.

  • The Request: Moses’ primary concern was not for his own legacy, but for the welfare of the people, asking God to appoint a leader so that the congregation would not be "as sheep which have no shepherd."

  • The Successor: God selected Joshua, the son of Nun—a man described as having "the Spirit in him"—to take Moses' place.

  • The Commissioning: Moses publicly laid his hands on Joshua in the presence of Eleazar the priest and the entire congregation, transferring his authority to ensure the people would listen.

Message References:

Primary Scripture Reference: Numbers 27:12–23
  • Numbers 27:12–14: The Lord reminds Moses of his previous disobedience (striking the rock at Meribah) and confirms the end of his leadership.

  • Numbers 27:15–17: Moses' selfless petition for a new leader to guide the Israelites.

  • Numbers 27:18–21: The formal appointment of Joshua and the instructions for his spiritual guidance through the Urim of Eleazar.

  • Numbers 27:22–23: Moses’ obedience in following God's specific instructions for the transition.

Lessons on Leadership and Transition

Pastor Chuck Swindoll draws out essential principles for passing the torch of influence:

  1. Selfless Concern for the Future: A truly dedicated leader cares more about the mission's continuation than their own continued position.

  2. Character over Charisma: God’s qualification for Joshua was the presence of the Holy Spirit. Spiritual leadership requires an internal reality, not just external skill.

  3. The Necessity of Formal Transition: Publicly commissioning a successor provides them with the credibility and authority needed to lead effectively.

  4. God's Work is Continuous: Individual leaders are temporary instruments, but the Shepherd of Israel never changes. The mission continues because God is the one directing it.

Insight for Living Broadcast

I looked you all up on Spotify and clicked on the Insight for Living link. It hit me like a brick in the face; the title of the very top episode was "Dealing with Discouragement." I listened to the episode on my drive home. I 100% believe it was God speaking to me and bringing me back from a life in darkness. I felt like it was God telling me, "This is the path and plan I have for you so keep going." —R. Y. from Georgia
