Don’t Miss the Entrance to Peace!

Overview:

Did you know that Scripture commands believers to let peace rule in our hearts? Yet so many of us churn with worry day after day.

From Isaiah 26 and Hebrews 4, Pastor Chuck Swindoll explains how peace is God’s gift to every believer. We don’t have to respond to life’s situations the world’s way because we possess supernatural faith.

Listen in and take hold of the truth that you can live above panic, worry, and fear.

Message Summary:

In this message centering on the third aspect of the Fruit of the Spirit, Chuck Swindoll addresses the universal struggle with anxiety and the desperate need for Peace. Swindoll begins by identifying the "churning place" inside every person—a space often filled with panic, worry, and fear regarding the unknown. He argues that worry and peace cannot coexist, noting that worry is an aggressor that fights to occupy the space God designed for tranquility [1, 6–7].
Turning to Isaiah 26 and Hebrews 4, Swindoll explores how believers can displace panic with God's perfect peace. He emphasizes that peace is not automatic; drawing from Colossians 3:15, he explains that believers must make a conscious decision to "let the peace of Christ rule" in their hearts. This involves fixing one's thoughts on the Eternal Rock rather than on the instability of life. Swindoll illustrates true trust using the metaphor of sitting in a chair: one does not inspect the legs or worry about the structure; one simply rests the full weight of their body upon it.
The message concludes with a sense of urgency found in Hebrews 4. Swindoll warns against the danger of missing God’s rest, just as the ancient Israelites missed the Promised Land due to unbelief. He clarifies that entering God's rest is not about observing a ritualistic Sabbath day, but about experiencing a moment-by-moment reliance on God. Whether facing a crisis at work or a family struggle, Swindoll urges listeners to enter that rest today, trusting God to handle what they cannot fix [24, 28–29].

Message Key Facts:

The "Churning Place": Swindoll coins this phrase to describe the internal space within the mind or soul that grabs onto "sticky" worries, panic, and fears. He notes that while God designed us to be peace-carrying believers, this internal churn often blocks that reality.
• Worry About Nothing: Swindoll opens with a concise summary of the prescription for peace found in Philippians: "Worry about nothing, pray about everything." He emphasizes that "nothing means nothing" and "everything means everything".
• Peace Is Not Automatic: Citing Colossians 3:15, Swindoll clarifies that being a Christian does not guarantee a peaceful mind. The command to "let the peace of Christ rule" implies a necessary decision to yield control to Him [7–8].
• Isaiah’s Formula for Peace: Swindoll breaks down Isaiah 26:3: "You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You."
    ◦ The Focus: The peace depends on the Lord ("You"), not the individual.
    ◦ The Recipients: The promise is for "all" believers.
    ◦ The Action: "Trust" is synonymous with "fixing your thoughts" on Him [11–13].
• Shalom Shalom: Swindoll explains that the phrase "perfect peace" in the Hebrew text is actually shalom shalom—a double measure of peace. It is a tranquility that floods the "churning place" when we fully lean on God.
• The Plastic Chair Illustration: Swindoll recalls the early days of his church meeting in a gymnasium with cheap white plastic chairs that would occasionally collapse under people. He contrasts those unreliable chairs with the "Eternal Rock" of scripture. Unlike the plastic chairs, God never cracks, gives way, or breaks under the weight of our burdens [15–18].
• The "Ordained" Business: Swindoll shares a story of a business owner who learned to view himself as an "ordained businessman." When his building caught fire, he remained calm, realizing that if God wanted to burn down His own business, that was His prerogative. This illustrates the peace that comes from relinquishing ownership to God [21–23].
• Sabbath is Not a Day: Expounding on Hebrews 4, Swindoll argues that the "Sabbath rest" available to believers is not limited to Saturday or Sunday. He mocks legalistic rituals, such as the "Sabbath elevator" that stops on every floor to avoid the "work" of pushing a button, to contrast ritualism with the true spiritual rest available every moment of the day [25–27].
• Tribute to Dr. Charles Stanley: Swindoll honors the passing of his contemporary, Dr. Charles Stanley, noting that the phrase "rest in peace" is a reality for the believer. Stanley is cited as a model of a life marked by the peace of God [3–4].

Message References:

• Galatians 5:22–23: The list of the fruit of the Spirit, where peace follows love and joy.
• Isaiah 26:3–4: "You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You, all whose thoughts are fixed on You... for the Lord God is the Eternal Rock".
• Hebrews 4:1–11: The warning not to miss God's rest and the invitation to enter it today [2–3, 24].
• Colossians 3:15: "Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts" [7–8].
• Philippians 4:6–7: Referenced in the introduction: "Worry about nothing, pray about everything".
