Position Summary

The Book Shoppe supervisor ensures the delivery of excellent guest experiences that promote the mission of Insight for Living Ministries (IFLM) and Vision 195 while creating a “ministry-first” environment for customers. Together with a thoroughly equipped and trained staff, the supervisor implements IFLM’s customer experience philosophy and standards of excellence, supports the building of lasting guest relationships, oversees Book Shoppe events, and ensures a level of fiscal integrity that represents a ministry of trust and quality.

Being familiar with IFLM’s theology and doctrinal stances, the supervisor assists support staff in answering theological questions or concerns in an accurate and thoughtful manner. A self-starter and forward thinker with a strong attention to detail, the supervisor partners with the Book Shoppe director to ensure guests feel comfortable, relaxed, and have the opportunity to grow spiritually by interacting with IFLM materials.

Core Job Functions

Supervision (40%)

  • Supervises staff efficiently and effectively, especially relating to scheduling, productivity, technical product knowledge, and morale
  • Implements and maintains Book Shoppe best practices related to daily customer experience, operations, inventory, merchandising, and budget
  • Tracks and maintains effective documentation of all relevant items related to daily operations, inventory, staff, and finances
  • Assists Book Shoppe director in training staff regarding best practices, customer interactions, service, and product knowledge
  • Professionally engages vendors and other service providers to maintain solid relationships

Customer Service (30%)

  • Cultivates and maintains a customer-oriented environment where guests feel welcomed and relaxed as they peruse products
  • Goes “above and beyond” to help customers with their questions, needs, and reasonable expectations
  • Builds lasting relationships through interactions that are warm, kind, and genuine
  • Ensures the appearance of the store is immaculate according to IFLM’s quality standards

Financial Oversight (10%)

  • Oversees interaction with the Book Shoppe’s point of sale system (POS), ensuring the highest levels of integrity and accuracy verified through periodic reviews and cross-checks
  • Ensures the daily reconciliation of all transactions to daily deposits
  • Prepares monthly financial reports and statements for review by the Book Shoppe director and IFLM’s Finance Department
  • Receives and stocks all inventory balancing sales and shelf merchandising needs
  • Prepares annual budget in conjunction with the Book Shoppe director

Marketing (5%)

  • Partners with the Book Shoppe director to implement marketing plans that promote the store and its products
  • Creates and maintains an events calendar filled with author meet and greets, musical talent, children’s events, and other interesting events in conjunction with the Book Shoppe director
  • Partners with IFLM’s Web Ministries and Publishing Departments to ensure all website content is up-to-date with current products, features, and promotions

Professional Development (5%)

  • Commits to the challenges of personal growth and development according to the Professional Development Plan
  • Pursues the designated knowledge and/or experience with a positive attitude
  • Completes assigned tasks with excellence and in a timely manner
  • Strives to become increasingly familiar with ministry resources and Book Shoppe offerings

Position Specifications

Job Qualifications

  • Strong biblical knowledge with the capacity to discern spiritual issues and point individuals toward appropriate ministry resources
  • Ability to share the gospel succinctly and clearly
  • Bachelor’s degree with five to seven years’ work experience
  • Prior retail supervisory experience (book retail preferred)
  • Strong familiarity with IFLM as a ministry, its products, and its materials
  • Professional interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence with the ability to build and maintain excellent relationships with staff and customers
  • Humility, a high level of flexibility, a positive attitude, and the ability to work well with others
  • Exceptional customer service orientation and demeanor
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and ability to reasonably troubleshoot technical issues
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis
  • Ability to stand, walk, and stoop throughout shift
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred
  • A passion for books, reading, and people

This is a full-time position—40 hours per week plus some weekend work.
